About the event
Looking at Art Talks with Emma Anderson
In collaboration with Contemporary Six
This November, we will be collaborating with Contemporary Six, a leading art gallery nestled in Hale Village, on a talk by art historian Emma Anderson exploring how the landscape has inspired Modern British painters.
As Senior Curator of Exhibitions at The Lowry when its galleries first opened, Emma was fascinated by the mysterious, empty landscapes of LS Lowry, which she counts amongst his most compelling works. She returns to these paintings, and explores them in the wider context of British landscape painting from the First World War to the present day. This talk will explore how artists have turned to the landscape for recovery and consolation, and how their emotionally charged works continue to influence how we see the English countryside today. ‘Modern British art’ is a retrospective label for the art made in Britain across the 20th-century and late 19th-century, a period that brought together many new and compelling visual languages.
19th November:

Introducing Contemporary Six
Founded in 2010 by Alex Reuben, Contemporary Six began in Manchester's Royal Arcade before moving to Princess Street. Today the gallery has found its home in Hale, neighbouring village to Oyez Arts, taking over the space of the former Clark Art gallery where it continues to welcome collectors, art lovers and the simply curious alike.
The gallery showcases an exceptional range of artwork, from emerging and established contemporary artists to Modern British and Northern art. It is also proud to be the leading commercial gallery in the North of England for original L.S. Lowry artworks, and the leading gallery internationally for his tutor, Adolphe Valette. With a specialist approach, an exciting exhibitions programme and a diverse roster of artists, Contemporary Six connects buyers with internationally acclaimed artworks.
All ticket proceeds will go to Oyez Arts, supporting our work in promoting art and creativity for everyone.
